Volume #28: October 2007

Harvest Update
Wow, a lot has happened since we sent out our last newsletter. At that point, harvest was just beginning and we had only brought in 3.3 of our 40 total tons for 2007. We are now over 90% complete. Fall arrived early so we brought in 60% of our total vintage in a four day time frame this past week! Once again, we have shown our true ãSwiss Army Knifeä flexibility by doing everything from truck dispatch to hand harvesting and hand sorting our grapes to BBQing lunch for our harvest crews. The grapes arrived at the winery with good flavors, sugar and structure and fermentations in barrel and in tank are underway. Our final harvest will be Syrah grapes grown at Zabala Vineyards in Soledad for production of our 2007 Victories RosŽ.

While we follow up-to-date winemaking techniques, we decided to go back in time and prepare one small batch by a very traditional method. Typically with red grape clusters, the grapes are removed from the stems before fermentation. In this fermentation of Madden Ranch Syrah, half the grapes were still on the clusters and Greg was the lucky one to do a traditional ãfoot stompä of these grapes in a small bin to extract color, flavor and stem components too. Donât worry, we made him clean his feet before hopping in! We videotaped this grand event for our records! The whole cluster fermentation will add another dimension to our popular Madden Ranch Syrah.

Tammy Larson ö Director of Administration & Customer Relations
My name is Tammy Larson and I joined Fleming Jenkins Vineyards & Winery in December 2005. While my background is in high-tech and biotech, including some great start-ups, cosmic forces have led me to the wine industry and I love it!

I have a Bachelors Degree in Public Relations and a Certificate in Program & Project Management, both from San JosŽ State University. My work at Fleming Jenkins has become a family affair ö my daughter is our official ãgirl of the grapesä. Like all of us here, I wear many hats including keeping the office running smoothly and anticipating our customersâ needs.
