Winning the Gold Medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble, France was a turning point in my life. I had no idea about the interesting,
diverse career awaiting me and the friendships I would make along the way. Last month Grenoble held a 40th year celebration of the Games,
and I was invited to participate. Greg was busy with our winery deadlines and new tasting room so Todd, our 19 year old son, and I went.
Todd is the same age I was when I won!
Grenoble staged a huge week long celebration with two TV shows to commemorate the Games. The latter one was in front of 28,000 people on
the outdoor speed skating track just outside the ice arena where I won. I visited my dressing room there, and again felt the terror and
pressure I experienced before taking the ice. One fun event was to go to the center of the stadium since it had no ice on it now, and kneel
down and sign my name on the flooring along with an outline of my handprints. The French got a big kick out of this moment! It was fun to
see many Olympians from the past, including Jean Claude Killy, who was on my first television special here in the USA. Grenoble hopes to
bid for the Olympic Games in 2018, so the Games may return to France again.
