Volume #49: July 2009

Jenkins Vineyard Chardonnay Update
2009 has been a good growing season so far for our Chardonnay vines. Most shoots are over 3 feet tall with two developing grape clusters. Active shoot growth is now slowing down so that the vine's energy can be directed to producing sugars to be transported into the grape clusters and berries. The grapes are still quite tart without appreciable sweetness, but this will change soon once the sugar levels start to rise. In fact, we'll be putting up our bird netting in the next two or three weeks to protect the grapes so that the local birds don't descend onto the vineyard for one giant bird banquet.

We planted additional Chardonnay vines down the middle of the existing rows in 2006, and this year we'll have a small harvest from the newer vines too. These vines are Dijon clone 96 in comparison to the Dijon clone 76 vines that produced our Chardonnay for the 2003-2008 vintages. We're looking forward to comparing the ripe berries from the two clones at harvest and to see how the resulting Chardonnay from each clone is similar and different. This is part of the learning process that all of us at Fleming Jenkins enjoy.

Wine Enthusiast 93 Point Score - 2007 Jenkins Vineyard Chardonnay
Speaking of our Chardonnay, we recently received the great news that our 2007 Jenkins Vineyard Chardonnay received 93 points from the Wine Enthusiast, with publication in the upcoming October 2009 issue. With a total production of only 191 cases, this wine is very close to being sold out, and we only have a few bottles left for sale through our Tasting Room. There is a one bottle per person limit now, so if you want to purchase this wine before it is completely gone, please visit us soon. We just bottled our 2008 Chardonnay this past week and we are looking forward to releasing it in the fall. At bottling, we felt the 2008 vintage will be as great as the 2007 Chardonnay!
