Volume #25: July 2007

2005 Madden Ranch Syrah Release
On July 21st, in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers’ Association Passport day, we released the 2005 vintage Syrah from John Madden’s vineyard in Livermore Valley. This wine shows overlapping aromas of dark plum, cranberry, slate, eucalyptus and new leather followed by tastes of dark fruit, raspberry and brown sugar. This Syrah is further supported by ripe grape tannins and acidity which leave the palate with a supple finish and memories of a wonderfully balanced wine.

Please visit our Tasting Room, Backyard Wineries, to be one of the first people to try this wonderful wine.
Bottling Update
On Friday, July 20th we bottled our two latest wines – the 2006 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay from our home vineyard, as well as our 2005 Napa Valley “Choreography”, Cabernet Blend. This was our biggest bottling day ever, with over 750 cases of the two wines combined. Look for these wines to be released towards the end of this year!
Behind the Label
People often comment on our bottle labels and we thought we would let you in on a few little known details. Over the past few years we have made small improvements to the Fleming Jenkins label, but the core elements have remained the same. While some of the imagery is subtle, they have significant meaning behind them. First off, the “F” and “J” towards the top of the label are “laser-cut”, an homage to Greg’s career as a dermatologist and skill in using medical lasers. The gold dot between those two letters…a representation of Peggy’s gold medal victory in the 1968 Olympic Winter Games. The curved silver lines across the middle of the label are “crossovers” - reminiscent of the tracings left in the ice while skating.
